Contingency Measures for Vehicle Circulation in Mexico City

Due to high ozone levels, Mexico City has implemented contingency measures restricting vehicle circulation on March 19. Specific categories of vehicles may still operate, particularly electric and hybrid models, while others face limitations.

The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) activated phase 1 of environmental contingency in the Valley of Mexico on Tuesday, March 18, due to high concentrations of ozone at the Gustavo A. Madero station. A maximum ozone concentration of 155 ppb was registered at 3:00 PM, and atmospheric stability in the ZMVM increased at 2:00 PM, making it difficult to disperse the precursor pollutants of ozone.

In the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico, the "ozone season" runs from February to June, where factors such as lack of wind, low humidity, intense solar radiation, and heat contribute to the prolonged presence of ozone, generating environmental contingencies. Another key factor was the intense solar radiation that favored the reactions for ozone formation from accumulated pollutants. Although the wind was weak, it is expected that weather conditions will continue to hinder the dispersion of pollutants.

Regarding circulation restrictions, private vehicles with verification hologram 0 and 00, red sticker, license plate endings 3 and 44, as well as taxis with verification hologram “00”, “0”, “1” or “2” have circulation restrictions from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. In contrast, electric and hybrid vehicles with ecological plates or exempt type holograms, as well as those with valid “0” or “00” holograms, may circulate regardless of sticker color and license plate endings. Vehicles intended for medical emergencies and certain school and specific urban service transports are allowed to circulate.

For Wednesday, March 19, due to the environmental contingency, a double Hoy No Circula will be applied. 50% of the L.P. gas distribution units to stationary tanks without a dry disconnect valve must suspend their circulation from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with NON license plate endings.
